- What is a Vestry?
- The Vestry is the governing body of the church. At St Matthew's our Vestry is comprised of seven church members and the priest. Their purpose is to serve God and the church through the oversight of finances, budgeting, outreach, building and grounds, programs, policies, personnel and planning.
- Who can serve on the Vestry?
- Vestry members are voted into office though the support of the congregation and serve a staggered three year term. Potential vestry members must be baptized, members of St Matthew's, over the age of 18, attend church regularly, and be contributors to the financial well being of the church.
- How is the Vestry Organized?
- The Vestry is a committee lead by a chairperson called a Bishop's (or Senior) Warden. The assistant leadership position is called a Junior Warden. A Treasurer and Clerk are appointed. All the Members of the Vestry, work together on the concerns of the church, appointing sub-committees as necessary.
- What is the role of the priest on the Vestry?
- The Priest is an active member of the Vestry. As the spiritual leader of the church, the priests role is to guide the work of the Vestry in matters so that the daily business and function of the church coincides with our calling to be the people of God.
